Almost every morning I have a shake for breakfast. I vary between at least 20 different ones, but they are all delicious, healthy and filling. I started having my shakes 4 years ago when I was trying to get my health back. I learned that a shake was the only thing that would keep me energized and satisfied until lunch. Now, I truly love them and I miss them when I’m not able to make one. This shake is one of my chocolatey treats, yet it gets a little zippy flavor from pomegranate seeds and strawberries. You will see from the list of ingredients that I add in a lot of superfoods; feel free to pick and choose what you like and just leave out what you don’t have on hand.
While this shake tastes every bit as good as a rich chocolate milkshake, there are hidden greens in it. You won’t taste them — really! I almost always throw a big handful of some type of green into my blender when I make a breakfast shake. I used dandelion greens in this shake for their detoxifying capabilities. This leafy green detoxifies your liver and helps your liver function better. It also acts as a diuretic and can help heal skin conditions like poison ivy and insect bites. Research has also shown it to be effective in fighting tumors.
I used pomegranate seeds because they help the body make better quality blood. This helps with healing and with energy. Anytime you are recovering from any injury (and my shoulder is still on the mend), it’s a good idea to eat pomegranate seeds. And, they are also good for the digestion.
Raw cacao lends a great chocolatey flavor and it’s a superfood that’s high in antioxidants and flavanoids, so your heart will thank you… In this particular version, I used some chocolate protein powder that I like too because I saw it sitting in my drawer. Again, when making a shake, there are no hard and fast rules, just do what feels right. If you are not using a sweetened protein powder, just make sure you use something to sweeten the shake, like honey or coconut sugar.
Pour coconut water and ice into a blender (I like my high-speed blender because it blends the greens up so that you don’t know they are there) with some strawberries…
Raw cacao and/or chocolate protein powder…
And any other superfoods, herbs, etc. that make you happy. I added some maca root powder and some bee pollen…
Whiz it up until it’s silky smooth…
Savor the chocolately richness and enjoy!
Chocolate-Pomegranate-Stawberry Breakfast Shake
1-1/2 cups coconut water
8 ice cubes
1/4 cup pomegranate seeds
2 scoops Rockin’ Wellness powder (or other sweetened chocolate protein mix of your choice)
2 Tbs chia seeds or hemp seeds
1 heaping Tablespoon of raw cacao powder
a big handful of dandelion greens (or any green of your choice — e.g.: spinach, kale, chard)
1 tsp maca powder (optional)
1 tsp bee pollen (optional)
raw cacao nibs for garnish (optional)
Put all ingredients into a high-speed blender. If you don’t have a high-speed blender, the shake will still be delicious, but the greens may not end up totally smooth. Whiz it up until it’s silky smooth. Enjoy!
